Gutter Maintenance Tips For Fall

Gutter Maintenance Tips For Fall

With the first day of fall officially taking place just a few days ago on September 23rd, it got us thinking about all the great times ahead of us in October and November: pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating, apple orchards, post-season baseball, cold-weather football, and of course the beginning of leaf season.

While we love the fall foliage as much as the next person, this time of the year presents problems for homeowners, especially those who have trees close to their homes. Yes, we’re talking about cleaning out your gutters!

To educate new homeowners and remind those who aren’t, here’s a helpful list of gutter cleaning tips for you to follow this fall.

Safety First!

This one goes without saying, but we’re putting it at the top of this list because it’s so important. Being safe, especially when using a ladder, should be one of your top priorities when cleaning your gutters.

First, inspect your ladder to make sure there aren’t any obvious defects like broken steps or structural damage. You’ll want to use a ladder that has non-skid bottoms so that you aren’t having to worry about it moving around when you’re using it. Lastly, make sure the ladder you’re using is one that you can move fairly easily – you’ll have to move the ladder into several different positions as you clean your gutters, and hauling around an overly-heavy ladder is only going to make your job more difficult.

Dress for the Job

This is another “common sense” entry, but still important to remember. When cleaning your gutters, make sure you’re wearing a good pair of gloves to help prevent scrapes and cuts. Gloves can also help you grip slippery items (AKA leaves).

Make sure you’re wearing good work boots also, particularly a pair with slip-resistant soles to give you more confidence on your ladder. As funny as it may look, it’s also a good idea to throw on a pair of goggles. There may be bacteria build-up or bugs hiding in the jumbles of leaves your cleaning, ready to say “hello” to the world after you’ve disturbed their home. Trust us, you don’t want any of that nastiness in your eyes!

Clear Your Roof Too!

It might be a good idea to do this step first before cleaning your gutters.

Cleaning your gutters is sort of pointless if you don’t clean your roof also. This is because leaves and debris can pile up on your roof, which will eventually fall into and re-clog your gutters the next time a heavy rain or snow shower occurs. Use a good broom to sweep this debris off your roof, over your gutter system and onto the ground below, where you can rake it up into a bag.

Pull Out Large Clogs First

Using your gloved hand, pull out big clogs from your drains first. Make sure you’ve got a bucket or something handy that you can put the leaves in, so you’re not having to dump them on the ground. This will help with cleanup. Be cautious when removing large clogs, as insects and pests sometimes take residence in the jumble of leaves. After you remove the large clogs, you can tackle the loose leaves next.

Use Water to Spray Loose Leaves from Gutters

Your best bet with this step is to use a power washer or the pressure sprayer setting on your hose to blast loose debris and leaves out of your gutters. It’s a good idea to clear out large clogs in your gutters first before moving on to this step. That’s because spraying large chunks of leaves with a hose can just re-clog your gutters and downspouts, which makes this job redundant. It’s all about being safe and efficient!
